The Association for Higher Education and Development (AHEAD) based in Ottawa,
Canada, was established in 1999 to organize, coordinate and channel the
contributions of Ethiopians in the Diaspora to assist in the capacity building
of higher academic institutions in Ethiopia. AHEAD supports financially bursary
programs for medical students in Gondar, Addis Ababa and Jimma. The program is
administered by the GBF. | |||||||

AHEAD was also instrumental in getting funds from the
Canadian Embassy in Ethiopia that helped establish in Jimma town a Resource Centre.
AHEAD President Temesghen Hailu said that the Jimma Resource Centre is a partnership
initiative between the Canadian Embassy, GBF and Ahead. He hoped that other
Ethiopian communities would follow the AHEAD example to work in partnership
with local organizations in undertaking projects that respond to the needs
of Ethiopians. The GBF-AHEAD Higher Education Resource Center in Jimma
The Resource Center was established in May, 2002 by GBF
in collaboration with the Association of Higher Education
and Development (AHEAD) and with financial support of the
Canadian Embassy in Ethiopia.The Center’s aim is to serve
as a reading room and information center for medical students and staff of Jimma University. | ||||||
Some books were
provided by GBF and AHEAD. The Center is provided with
eight computers. University and high school students use
this facility to write their reports, theses and term
papers. The monthly number of visitors’ ranges between 75 to 200.
