Although I realize being a student could be
the best part of ones life, it could however
also be a bitter chapter in the life of some students.
This is particular so for the poorest of the poor.
As a country boy, I learnt already when I was very young,
to ignore comfort, to manage with the
very minimum, and not to envy those who are much better off than me.Nowadays I
find it unbearable when my economic limitations come in
the way of my academic performance, that is when I could
not afford to be able to buy stationery, and pay for photocopy
services and the like. Hence I am grateful to have been selected
for the AHEAD Fellowship

I come from a very poor family who make their living as farmers in the country side. My parents have already made great sacrifice to satisfy my needs. When I was wishing so much not to be any more burden on
them, then I heard the good news of my selection as Fellow of AHEAD.I do not know therefore how to thank
all those Ethiopians in Canada, and here at home of made
this possible.

My main problem is due
to the fact that my father has become mentally
ill. He used to be the principal income earner
in our family by working day and night as a guard.
Now that he is sick, not only is our income
affected but we cannot also afford to get him
the necessary medical attention. My mother now
works as a daily laborer.

When my mother passed away in 2003 my step father was not willing to see me through high school. So I left home, with some support from relatives and also working half day, I managed to complete high school with good grades that enabled me to join medical school. Currently I face serious financial constraints.

I have been facing serious economic difficulties since I joined the Medical Faculty in the year 2004. I could not cope, using the very limited financial support I get from my parents, to meet the high expenses such as for purchasing stationery, books etc. I am therefore extremely pleased to have been selected for the AHEAD Fellowship.
